Unfortunately, individuals age 65 and older are often under-diagnosed and offered less support for mental health issues (Newman, 2017).

Some challenges that are unique to older adults living with mental health diagnoses such as depression and anxiety:

  • Limitations set by Medicare insurance

  • Ageism 

  • Access issues with respect to abilities, geography and living on a fixed income

  • Biased views held by older adults and providers about mental health issues 

  • Over-reliance on nursing homes to be a one-stop shop for care

  • Autonomy, Competency and Capacity
